Jackie Olsen has raised sheep since she was nine. Sadly, in 2002, when her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers, Jackie had to sell her sheep to care for her mother. Jackie still has her show fleeces to work with and fleeces from one special multi-colored wether that, if Jackie had known his wool was going to be so fine, would never have become a wether. Jackie even had to buy this sheep from her husband, as it was his ewe that produced the wonderful lamb. The wether lived to be thirteen years old. Columbia, Suffolk, Hampshire, Targhee, and Finn-Landrace are all sheep breeds that Jackie has raised. The last flock was 1/4 Finn and 3/4 Targhee which produced varied grades of wool with a luster that is easily seen in the yarn. The sheep were protected by guard donkeys and guard dogs.
Jackie has been knitting for 47 years, spinning and felting for 18 years. She has been hooking rugs for many years. Anyone interested in lessons can stay at the cabins on the ranch in Central Montana while they are learning. |
